The Clickfree Transformer for iPod ($49.99 list) takes one of the really cool technologies of 2009 and makes it even better. We looked at the Clickfree Transformer Cable earlier this year, and the company hasn't been resting on its laurels since then. Clickfree's Transformer for iPod turns your iPod or iPhone into an instant backup device, with the added benefit of letting you grab the music from your iPod to your iTunes library, in case your computer fails.
The Transformer for iPod cable matches the look and feel of the white USB cable packed in with every new iPhone or iPod (classic , Touch , shuffle , or nano ). You'll need that USB cable, as the Clickfree Transformer doesn't have an iPod dock connector. It's a minor inconvenience, though I wish that Clickfree had included the iPod's proprietary 30-pin connector on the Transformer (it's only USB-to-USB).
The new Transformer for iPod cable works just like the old Transformer Cable, except you can use an iPod or iPhone to store your files instead of an external USB drive. (To back up using any other storage device, you'll have to go back to the original Transformer Cable.) Just like all Clickfree products, if you just connect it, the Transformer for iPod will grab all the documents off your PC or Mac's hard drive, and then copy them to the iPod/iPhone, no setup required. The benefit of the iPod cable is that you're more likely to have your iPod or iPhone with you at all times; an external drive, not so much. The Transformer for iPod will fill up your iPod/iPhone's free space with your computer's documents, but it won't touch your existing music, videos, apps, or photos. You normally have to use iTunes to modify those files.

In practice, the Transformer for iPod works pretty well, even on an iPhone that has only a few GB of storage left. My five-year-old accumulated 'work documents' folder on my MacBook Pro is only about 1.2GB, so it easily fit on my iPhone 3G S, which had 2GB free. When you run out of space, the Transformer for iPod functions like any other backup device: It won't back up anything and it will tell you so. Like the older Clickfree products, it works on Macs and Windows, though in Windows you need to be using an Administrator-level account. Limited Windows accounts (like the ones you'd give your kids on a shared PC) won't let you run the Clickfree software.
Since I'm nit-picking, it's kind of annoying that you need .NET pre-installed on Windows PCs, but if you use a lot of programs, you may already have that on your system already. .NET is a Windows-based framework that most systems come with nowadays. If by chance you don't have it, you can download it from Microsoft or the Clickfree installer program will download .NET for you.
The really neat feature of the Transformer for iPod is the option to 'import music,' which appears as a button on the Clickfree start screen. You can choose all or some of the music on your iPod, and import it into your iTunes library. What's really cool is that you can choose individual files or individual playlists for importation. Ideally, you can use this to return your library to a PC or Mac that you've just recovered.
The Transformer for iPod's main competitors are external hard drives that already have backup programs pre-installed like the Clickfree Traveler , Clickfree HD325 , and the Seagate Replica drive. I like Clickfree's 'no-touch' backup operation, since it is so simple to use, but still offers filtering and some customizability if you dig around the program a little. The Transformer for iPod improves on the old Transformer Cable that only worked with external drives. It's also less disruptive to your system than software solutions that 'plug in' to iTunes so you can import your music off of your iPod/iPhone; it's one less thing to install. Besides, if you buy a Transformer for iPod primarily to recover your music once, you get a backup solution for 'free.'
The Clickfree Transformer for iPod refines an already excellent backup idea, with fringe benefits. Using the extra storage you carry around with you anyway is a good strategy to keep your data backed up and handy, and your media is also safeguarded against a system crash. Besides, if you leave a hard drive in the office, you might give pause but then go on home. Leave your office or dorm room without your iPod or iPhone? Now that would be a disaster.

I have a new MacBook Pro and I would like to use my ClickFree Automatic Backup disc (HD10373) with it. I already use the HD10373 with my PC. The manufacturer says that I can use the external backup disk with both my Mac and my PC at the same time. It also says that when connecting the HD10373 to my Mac, a window is supposed to appear that would let me use the disk.
No window is appearing. When I look to the informations in the console, here is what I get :
